India is famous for its wildlife sanctuaries, and one such sanctuary that must be discovered is the Wild Ass Sanctuary. This sanctuary is situated in the northeast of Gujarat, which is one of the top tourist destinations. Covering an area of around 4594 sq km, the Wild Ass Sanctuary is renowned for the Wild Ass Equus Hemionus Khur species, also known as Ghudkar. There are about 4455 wild asses here that roam in herds. A lot of tourists visit this sanctuary, and you can also visit to view the last wild asses.
The region’s interesting topology suggests that it used to be a part of the sea. There are diverse species of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is easily accessible by road, being only 45 km from Viramgam and 130 km from Ahmedabad. You can also travel by train and then take local jeeps, buses, or a car to reach the sanctuary. The best time to visit is from November. At night, visitors should carry woolens and boots, as temperatures drop. During summers, roaming and viewing the sanctuary is difficult as even the animals stay away from open spaces. Dawn and dusk are the best times during the day to view the animals and birds.
Additionally, you can visit the matrimonial fair hosted by Sundernagar in September and then explore the Wild Ass Sanctuary. For accommodation, you can join an Eco camp, which also offers trekking opportunities, or opt for rural hut accommodations. The Wild Ass Sanctuary is worth a visit as it offers educational insights about the ecosystem and adds unforgettable memories to your trip.
